Voluntary Standards

This standard for four-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is the fifth revision of the ATV industry voluntary standard developed by members of the Canadian Off-High Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV), formerly called the Canadian All-Terrain Vehicle Distributors Council (CATV).

The COHV 1-2018 adopted the ANSI/SVIA 1-2017 by reference and also specified labeling and owner’s manual requirements. The revised ANSI/SVIA 1-2017 addresses design, configuration and performance aspects of ATVs, including, among other items, requirements for mechanical suspension; throttle, clutch and gearshift controls; engine and fuel cutoff devices; lighting; tires; operator foot environment; service and parking brake/parking mechanism performance; and pitch stability. It also covers some other areas, including

  • Definition of Type I and Type II ATVs,
  • Youth and T category ATVs;
  • Requirements for Type II ATV;
  • labels
  • owner’s manuals,
  • hang tags, and a
  • compliance certification label

The COHV and its member companies have agreed to fully adopt the ANSI/SVIA 1-2017 standard by reference with altered requirements stated in section 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of this standard.

This is the third edition of the recreational off-highway vehicle standard for off-road vehicles (excluding all-terrain vehicles) and has been developed by members of the members of the Canadian Off-High Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV).The COHV 2-2017 adopts the ANSI/ROHVA 1-2016 by reference and addresses design, configuration and performance aspects of ROVs, including, among other items, requirements for the accelerator, clutch and gearshift controls; lighting; tires; service and parking brake/parking mechanism performance; lateral and pitch stability; occupant handholds; Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS); and Occupant Retention System (ORS); and requirements for labels and owner’s manuals.

The COHV and its member companies have agreed to fully adopt the new standard by reference with altered requirements as stated in sections 5, 6 and 7.

This standard is the second edition for off-highway vehicles, other than Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROV) defined in COHV 2-2016, designed for multipurpose utility use has been developed by the members of the Canadian Off-High Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV).

This voluntary standard adopts the ANSI/OPEI B71.9 -2016 by reference and also specifies labeling requirements and owner’s manual. ANSI/OPEI B71.9 -2016 addresses design configuration and performance aspects of utility vehicles, including, among other items, requirements for occupant protective systems, parking brake/parking mechanism, lighting, tires, and static stability and dynamic stability.

The COHV and its member companies have agreed to adopt the standard by reference with  altered requirements as stated in section 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
